Image of a car alone - video and audio of narrator walking through the car as follows:

“This is a typical Formula Vee. As you can see, it looks the part of a formula race car, with its open wheels and cigar shaped body. Formula cars have been around for more than 50 years.

(pause)What sets Formula Vee apart is its being based on the use of stock components from this car.."

Hold up mounted photo of a Beetle

“Yes, the Volkswagon Beetle. When this class was formed in 1963… The intent was to keep its costs as low as possible, by using affordable and dependable components from a production automobile. The Volkswagon Beetle was chosen for two reasons - first, it is made from lightweight, strong, inexpensive components; Second, the formula was created by a Florida Volkswagon dealer who was also an SCCA road racer. Little did he know that the formula would enjoy 45 years of success, delivering the same value, through several generations. Its future looks just as strong.”

Pointing to a tire “One of the most distinctive visible clues of a Formula Vee are its tires. These are a product of the use of stock V.W. steel rims. Don’t let their narrow profile fool you, these tires are constructed specifically for Formula Vee racing, and capable of producing very high levels of grip, while their width enhances aerodynamic efficiency.”

Remove the nose of the car to reveal the front end. “Another major component taken from the original car is the front suspension. This is essentially taken from the donor car in tact, and slightly modified to accommodate the race cars light weight, and to increase roll resistance.”

Point to steering box: “This steering box is another component taken from the donor car.”

Point to brakes at front: “Stopping power is provided by stock Volkswagon drum brakes. Since the racecar weighs a tad over a thousand pounds, less than half the original cars mass, effective braking is very good and well matched to the tires used. More importantly, this continues the theme of using strong, readily accessible stock components. Replacement parts can still be picked up at most local parts stores.”

Remove engine cowl: “At this end, we have the remaining major components taken from the donor car, the engine and transmission. A simple conversion within the transmission from the original rear engine location to mid engine mount creates a car with excellent balance. The 1200 CC engine utilizes stock components, with fine tuning for race use, bringing power from the original 40 horsepower to around 60 horsepower, with improved dependability when operated at racing engine speeds. That 60 horsepower, combined with the cars very light weight, creates a power to weight ratio similar to the approach taken by most European race-car builders, favoring small engines in lightweight racecars….

The use of dependable stock components, and technical rules stability means that many race engines and transmissions have been in service for decades, with regular service and rebuilding. This keeps expenses of continued operation low, and resale values high.”

Point to rear suspension. “This is a unique suspension system, designed to produce maximum rear wheel traction, with the lightest weight possible. A simple mono shock with adjustments for damping and ride height are all that is needed, and makes tuning for race conditions very easy.”

Move to driver compartment: “In the driver’s seat, it’s all business. There is nothing here that is not necessary to racing, the fit is close to keep the driver securely in place, and the position is laid back to distribute weight. There is one adjustment for brake bias, and that’s about it. A fire system and safety fuel cell protect the driver in an accident, as does a full roll bar system.”

Remove the main body: “Under the main body, these cars are as simple as they get. There is very little torsion stress on the chassis due to the design of the rear suspension, so the chassis can be very simple and lightweight. Side protection for the driver is provided by a combination of chassis design and several layers of Kevlar used in the construction of the body."

Standing in front of the car with the bodywork aside: “As you can see, these are not intimidating cars mechanically. Virtually all regular maintenance can be accomplished with common hand tools, while specialists are established to help with the more technical work. This class has been active continuously for 45 years, which means that supplies and assistance is well established and widely available.”

Body on the car, complete: “Very simple and founded on affordable components, Formula Vee has proven itself to be an ideal class for a wide range of racers, and the foundation for highly competitive racing… but, to find this out, you need to come out and race one for yourself!” Fade to black
